Severn Cullis-Suzuki has been speaking up for what she believes since she was a child. At age 9, she started the Environmental Children’s Organization, a group of young people committed to learning and teaching other kids about environmental issues. Their organizing efforts brought them to 1992’s Rio Earth Summit, where 12-year-old Severn delivered a powerful speech which gained worldwide attention. For this she received the UN Environment Program’s Global 500 Award at a ceremony in Beijing, China.
Ten years after Rio, Severn returned to the UN meetings as a member of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s Special Advisory Panel at the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa. She brought the 'Recognition of Responsibility' on behalf of her North American peers who were frustrated by political inaction on sustainability. The trip was the subject of a documentary film that aired on CBC’s long-running documentary series The Nature of Things.
Severn has continued to speak out and write on the necessity of defining as a society what is important to us, on acting with the future in mind and the interconnection between culture and environment. With peers at her university, she co-founded the Skyfish Project, an Internet-based think tank that encouraged her generation to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. In the summer of 2000, she and five friends biked across Canada in a climate change and air pollution campaign called "Powershift".
Severn has completed several speaking tours and published books in Japan with the Namakemono Club. She has co-hosted a TV series for children called Suzuki's NatureQuest, and is one of the authors and editors of the book Notes from Canada's Young Activists (Greystone Books 2007). Severn took some time out to get a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Yale University, and a Masters of Science in Ethnobotany from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, where she studied with Kwakwaka'wakw elders about food harvesting practices on the Pacific Northwest coast.
